65 homes for the aged sheltering only 2000 senior citizens

Despite the number of homes for the aged has increased to 65, these centers can take care of just over 2,000 old persons.

There are about 5.23 million senior citizens in Myanmar, and some of them are provided with assistance at in some townships under the program of ASEAN-KOREA Homecare Services.

Criteria of home for the aged for the acceptance of old persons are different from one center to another. Only when the elder meet the rules of each facility, they are accepted from these centers.

“The number of homes for the aged has increased across the country. The donors are desirous to establish the centers,” according to a responsible person of Social Welfare Department.

Authorized homes for the aged in Yangon Region are Hninzigone Home for the Aged, Kayan Home for the Aged, Young Buddhist Nun Home for the Aged, Shwethanlwin Home for the Aged, Mibagon (Gratitude of Parents) Home for the Aged, Okkan Home for the Aged, Kyauktan Home for the Aged, Daethanaw Home for the Aged, Mother’s Love Home for the Aged and Lumbini Home for the Aged.  These centers are now sheltering over 600 old persons.

A responsible person of Hninzigon Home for the Aged said, “We are accommodating about 200 old persons at our center. We are planning to take care of 240 elderly persons in our center. Female elders outnumber males here. Most of them are from Yangon.”
 
Although the number of homes for the aged has increased across the country, the elder population at these centers is still few.

Some homes for the aged have submitted to establish new centers, and the Social Welfare Department will scrutinize and permit the registration of these new centers if these facilities meet the rules and principles of this department.

Among the authorized homes for the aged in Yangon Region, Hninzigone Home for the Aged is accommodating the largest number of elderly persons.
