Scholarship opportunities in Australia

Australia Awards are an Australian Government initiative designed to promote knowledge, education links and enduring ties between Australia, our neighbours and the global community.

Under the Australia Awards Initiative, Australian Development Awards including Australian Development Scholarships(ADS) and Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships (ALAS) are now open for Myanmar applicants.

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) aim to contribute to long-term development needs aligned with Australia’s aid program objectives. Australia’s priorities in Myanmar include health (especially for mothers and children), basic education, food security and livelihoods (agriculture). However, cross cutting themes will also be considered including law, public policy, economics, development studies and international relations.

The Australian Leadership Award Scholarships (ALAS) are aimed at enhancing leadership and building partnerships and linkages within developing countries, while addressing priority development areas. The ALAS are similar to ADS however selection for ALAS is global, highly competitive and awardees are provided with opportunities to enhance their leadership capacity and extend their networks.

For Myanmar applicants, both ADS and ALAS are for postgraduate studies only. A common set of base entitlements apply to both, with ALAS recipients eligible for additional leadership training and support.
Applications from Myanmar citizens for ADS and ALAS for commencement in the 2012 academic year will close on 31 May 2011. Requirements for an Australian Development Awards application include, but are not limited to*:
  • The ability to satisfy the admission requirements of the Australian university at which the scholarship is to be undertaken;
  • Current and acceptable results from an IELTS or TOEFL test;
  • Not having held a foreign scholarship in the 24 months preceding the application closing date;
  • Undertake to return to Myanmar for at least two years immediately upon completion of the Award to help build the country’s capacity.

The Australian Government has made gender equality and the empowerment of women a priority of the Australian aid program. The Australia Awards program strives for equal representation of males and females.

In line with the Australian Government's strategy "Development for All: Towards a disability-inclusive Australian aid program 2009-2014", AusAID is committed to offering educational opportunities to people with disability. Please be aware that the Australian Government does not use any external organisations to facilitate scholarship applications for Myanmar students. You should very wary of any organisation claiming to be taking applications on behalf of the Australian Embassy Yangon. Applications can only be lodged on-line (http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/pdf/burma.pdf) or at the Australian Embassy Yangon.

Myanmar citizens living outside Myanmar may be eligible to apply for Australia Awards Endeavour program www.australiaawards.gov.au
