Awareness stickers on trafficking in persons to be posted on buses

With the growing backdrop of trafficking in persons even inside the country, deterrent and effective measures to curb the incidents is urgently needed, and therefore, awareness information, stickers and relevant telephone numbers for complaints are to be posted on the domestic highway buses as well as local transport in Yangon, it was leant.

In Myanmar, the destinations of trafficking in persons are neighboring countries, mainly China and the victims were trafficked through the border exits, committing trans-border crimes. Therefore, the human trafficking awareness information, warning stickers and complaint telephone numbers are posted on the highway passenger buses. Moreover, short video clips in connection with the trafficking in persons are also shown on the public buses.

In fact, human trafficking trade is not only occurring in the border towns, but the untoward events are also happening in many towns in the Yangon Region where the human traffickers are moving actively and the naïve victims are being targeted. Therefore, plans are underway to raise awareness effectively on the prevention of trafficking in person in economic city of Yangon. In addition to the highway public buses, educative posters, information stickers and complaint telephone numbers are to be posted on the local transport vehicles in Yangon.

“The main destination of trafficking in persons is the other country through the border towns, but the offenders are threatening and exploiting the victims from one area to another in the country. They lured and tricked the innocent people across the country and brought them into Yangon for temporary gathering. Then they escorted them to the border areas for trafficking. The main areas for such trade are now northern Shan State and Yangon Region. The victims fallen into the hands of the traffickers are so simple that they never realize being trafficked. Therefore, the young people should inform the parents in advance where they are going and what they are going to do. Moreover, one should know to whom they should contact and to which telephone number they must complain if something happened to them,” a researcher in trafficking in person concluded.
