Refugee Program on the Thai Burma Border

University for Refugees April 2011 Update

ACU's Faculty of Arts & Sciences Refugee Program, Thai-Burma border offers tertiary education to Burmese refugee students at the camps.

"I never give up" – ACU Burmese migrant student, Ranong, southern Thailand

The above quote is typical of the spirit of the Burmese refugee and migrant students. Duncan MacLaren, the Faculty of Arts and Science program coordinator spent nearly three weeks in March interviewing the students who have just completed the third unit of the eight-unit Diploma in Liberal Studies.
Duncan's overall impression was that there had been a great improvement in students' English and critical thinking faculties and an improvement in computer skills (some had never touched a computer before).
The student's passion for higher education remains undimmed, illustrated well by their rigorous daily study regime.  When asked what they wanted to do on completion of their Diploma (around June 2012), over 90% of them said they wanted to go on to study for a degree. Duncan also attended the wedding of one of the past graduates, Hser Hser, in Mae La refugee camp.
